Hidden Treasures: Latter Day Gospel Discussions with Kevin Hinckley

In Nephi's vision he speaks about the "Plain and Precious truths" that will be removed from Book of the Lamb of God. What are these truths? Please note: the recording ends prematurely at the 49:00 minute mark.

In the beginning of Nephi's great vision, he is asked if he knows the condescension of God. He is also shown the contending attitudes of those in the building.  The Lamb of God was contrite, giving us an example to follow of humility and healing.

In Lehi's dream, many people make their way to the tree. Two groups handle the journey differently: the Clingers and the Holders. How they respond to the Iron Rod is radically different. In addition, Nephi provides a recipe of learning the hidden treasures of the dream.

Lehi's dream in 1 Nephi 8 and Nephi's vision beginning in 1 Nephi 11 provide a powerful insights into our journey through mortality. But there is also a fountain of water at the tree as well. What does that mean? And what does that relate to the temple and its purpose there?

Early in the Book of Mormon, Nephi is confronted with a difficult decision, the killing of Laban to obtain the plates of brass. How do we feel about a prophet killing an unarmed man when commanded by God? How did Nephi respond?

1st Nephi can sound like a morality play: the good guys versus the bad guys. Why Nephi write that way? Are there things he could have done differently? Lets look at how rods and plates help tell the story

As the Book of Mormon opens, Father Lehi is granted a vision of the throne of God. He is also given a book to read. Even though the book proclaims the coming destruction of Jerusalem, Lehi rejoices at what he has seen and heard. What was it he saw that causes his joy? 

As the Book of Mormon opens, we see Father Lehi worried and praying about his people. In response, he is granted a trip into the great councils of God. What he learns there causes him to rejoice, despite the coming destruction of Jerusalem. This opening chapter contains powerful insight into the workings and mysteries of God and how he interacts with his prophets. 

The prophet Lehi left a Jerusalem in turmoil. Babylon was approaching. The purge of Josiah had altered the Israelite religion. The Hebrew bible was about to written--or rewritten. And the effects on Lehi's family would last for a thousands of years. Lets look at Lehi in his setting and see the effect it had on Laman and Lemuel. 

 

Prophets produce scripture. But they also rely on past inspired writings. Do we expect infallibility in both? How do we discern if what we read is inspired or based on earlier understandings?
